Remembering the Battle of Lewes Road 100 years ago

It was on this day 100 years ago that the General Strike began when millions walked out in support of miners striking against cuts in pay and increases in hours.  Trades Council is pleased to be supporting commemorations of the role of the Brighton Trade Union movement in this momentous event, taking place this week.

The Trades Council (founded in 1890) was at the forefront, transforming itself, as in many areas, into a Council of Action.

In particular, we will be remembering the Battle of Lewes Road on 11th May, when 4000 trade unionists fought to stop strikebreakers taking trams out of Tramway House (now the Lewes Road bus garage).  Ranged against them were 300 foot police and 50 mounted “special constables”.

On Saturday 9th May we will be unveiling a plaque at Tramway House and there will be speeches and a film showing the events of that day.

There will also be a gig on Monday 11th May with David Rovics and Robb Johnson.

See above for times and details.
