May Day fundraisers!

International Workers' Day and May Day weekend events raised over £300 for the Brighton Stop the Cuts Coalition campaign against cuts with hundreds of people taking part.

The May Day football tournament involved ten teams and was won by women's team The Criminals and by men's team Workers Of The World Unite from the Brighton University Stop the Cuts campaign. Two evening gigs provided a delightful distraction from the Royal Wedding and celebrated workers' past achievements, and rambling for access in East Sussex gave us an excuse to check out wild bluebells while highlighting the need for us all to defend our common land.

Many thanks to all the organisers for all the events that took place, with special thanks to Kit Ashton, Jon Mason, Ben Raikes, Tony Greenstein, Chris Smith, Kim Turner, Carly North and Trailer Trash, Gerry Hyde and the excellent socialist choir Strawberry Thieves.

Further donations from trade unions and community groups were made to the Brighton Stop the Cuts Coalition funds and more plans for fundraising and awareness raising of the fight to stop cuts are underway. Get in touch via brightontradescouncil@gmail.com if you have any unwanted belongings for an upcoming car boot sale or ideas for any other great events. Thank you.

Help plan for this year's Brighton May Day Workers Festival

International Workers' Day and May Day weekend is a beacon in our year of struggle for us to join together to celebrate our working class history and achievements and to protest against oppression and injustice.

This first meeting is being held to get a list of events we can plan together so that finances/venues/advertising can be initially worked out. So come along bristling with ideas for... Venues, bands, talks, demonstrations, publicity stunts, plays, etc...

The more people who each organise an event, the bigger the festival shall be! Up the workers of Chicago 1886! Join the Facebook event and group here!

April Trades Council meeting

Greetings comrades.

The April meeting of Trades Council will be at 8pm on Wednesday 7 April, at The Stag, Upper Bedford Street, Kemp Town, Brighton.

This meeting will be the first since the excellent March for Jobs demonstration and will be a great opportunity to discuss the next stage of the campaign following strike action by BA cabin crew, PCS workers and UCU staff at Sussex University among others.

We have union members wanting to co-ordinate action against the plans for Portslade Community College to be turned into a city academy, May Day plans to organise, and an idea for a public meeting to on the right to strike and the anti-trade union laws has been put forward for discussion, in light of the undemocratic decisions made by unelected judges to stop Unite BA and RMT strike action.

Spread word of our meeting and let everyone in your union branch know there's a trades council meeting going on.

See you all there.

Join Brighton trade unionists and campaigners in remembering the heroic struggles of working people with hundreds of thousands of celebrations taking place this May Day weekend across the world.

The history and the achievements of the trade union movement can be seen today in almost all of our day-to-day lives. The creation of the National Health Service, pension rights, council homes, maternity and paternity leave, free education, disability rights, decent conditions at work, the eight-hour working day, along with many more, have all been fought for by mass movements of working class people. And while these public services are constantly under attack and threatened with privatisations and cuts, they are still in existance today because of the working class unity and fighting spirit offered by the organised trade union movement.

When Aneurin Bevan opened the first NHS hospital in 1948 he said the NHS will only continue to exist as long as their are people around to fight for it. Yet in this statement he spoke about all these social achievements won by the working class and the importance of continuing to fight for their survival and constant improvement.

With the threats of racism and fascism, changes in the labour market, debates over the future of public services and the unjustified effects of capitalism’s current crisis on the working class, the trade union voice in the community is as important as ever. The capacity of trades union councils to provide a local response and to organise trade unionists into coalitions with other progressive forces is crucial. This includes keeping local trade unionists up-to-date with developments within the wider trade union movement and by taking up relevant local industrial and community issues.

The usefulness of such a network has been demonstrated time and again over the last few months in Brighton alone. The strike of Unite workers at Sussex University over an attack on pensions; the strike ballot of bus workers over pay on Brighton & Hove Buses; the strikes in local government and the Civil Service by Unison and PCS members; the CWU Post Office workers strike last winter; the strikes of UCU lecturers in FE colleges; the action of the teachers in the NUT; the ‘wild-cat’ actions of the GMB organised refuse workers... Every action was a triumph in itself yet strengthened further by the organised support of the local trades council.

Come along and get involved in the celebrations this May Day and find out more about how the trade union movement can be built to fight for a better world.

Solidarity is strength!
